- Kell Brook is set to face Canadian based Kevin Bizier in March
- IBF welterweight champion will travel to Canada to face mandatory challenger
- Promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed Brook is in a ‘major stadium fight’ next summer
A mouthwatering British welterweight showdown between Kell Brook and Amir Khan could be just weeks away from being announced. As we told you here first, IBF 147 lb champion Brook is about to ink terms for a mandatory defence with Kevin Bizier. The surprising move will see the champion travel over to Canada next March with the British team keen to get their mandatory challenger (25(17)-2) out the way before a big stadium fight which looks set to be announced by promoter Eddie Hearn.
Khan (31(19)-3) and Brook (35(24)-0) have enjoyed a frosty relationship over the past few years, to say the very least, however, it appears to have thawed somewhat over the past few weeks with the former unified light welterweight titlist sitting ringside with Hearn at the Smith v Fielding clash earlier in the month. A fight between the two rivals would likely break domestic records and has vested worldwide interest, with both fighters widely recognised as top three rated within most people’s welterweight rankings – including mine.
Rumour has it that Khan has agreed to face off with Brook in a huge domestic fight which will likely take place at London’s 80, 000 capacity Wembley Stadium – the scene of the record-breaking Froch v Groves rematch last summer. Brook is recovering from a rib injury, which was sustained in the run-up to his planned October 24th duel with Diego Chaves, although he is now allegedly in camp to face Bizier with both Hearn and his Canadian counterpart Yvon Michel (GYM) currently in advanced negotiations to make the SKY Sports televised ruck.
Hearn has now confirmed our two exclusive stories via his regular column in the Daily Mail. “We have this week been ordered to fight the IBF mandatory, Kevin Bizier. That would not have huge appeal in the UK so we might even look at the US or Canada. I’m planning a little further ahead though and we are close to tying up a major stadium fight in the early summer. Watch this space,” Hearn stated. Khan has limited options at the weight regarding such a high profile event, with Danny Garcia moving away from a rematch with the Brit to instead fight Robert Guerrero in January, whilst long-term target Manny Pacquiao has opted to face WBO 140 lb boss Terence Crawford in his farewell fight.
